Biography
Profile Summary • Thirty years of direct, hands-on process/project engineering, operational, project management, and leadership experience in complex and highly regulated industries (nuclear; pulp and paper; chemical; power generation). • Effective team builder with demonstrated abilities at facilitating and leading multi-discipline engineering and operations teams to realize performance improvements in plant operations, maintenance, process control, environmental , health and safety compliance programs, and nuclear safety. • Adaptable and personable with a strong work ethic and a “hands-on” approach to problem solving and managing people, processes, and programs. Education Registered Professional Engineer (Ohio) Project Management Professional (PMP) Master’s coursework (40%), Environmental Engineering, Georgia Tech, 1994-1996. U.S. Navy Submarine Officer, Naval Nuclear Engineer Department Head, Naval Reactors-Department of Energy, 1988. B.S., Civil Engineering, Carnegie-Mellon University, 1985. Relevant Experience & Accomplishments Engineering and Project Management • Lead the engineering teams for three (3) major environmental retrofit capital projects at AEP, totaling over $1.2 billion. Responsible for the complete engineering and design packages from project conceptual development through construction and startup of wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers, dry sorbent FGD scrubbers, Activated Carbon Injection Systems, and Selective Catalytic Reduction systems. Project metrics consistently exceed goals. • Proactively developed and maintained positive working relationships with Architect/Engineering firms, key process Original Equipment Manufacturers, and equipment vendors to provide a final engineering package (Civil, Electrical / I&C, and Structural/Mechanical), including equipment, material and labor work scope, to support construction and project management. Experienced in: contract administration, schedule development, contractor management, resource augmentation services, outsource resources, project controls, safety policies, design development, project closeout, construction startup, project kickoff, project charter development, scope development, communication plans, material procurement, proposals, program design management, stakeholder management , technical training, operating procedure writing, Federal and State permitting requirements, etc. • Management of project schedule and assignment of resources to perform routine engineering reviews, significant design review meetings, team interface meetings, management of action plans, lead and facilitate corrective action plans to maintain project quality, cost, and schedule. Close collaborative team work with AEP Engineering Services, Environmental Services, Contracts, Construction, and Quality Assurance Services in successful execution of projects. • Spearheaded the conversion of paper mill’s biocide treatment process from gaseous chlorine to bleach/bromine treatment. Supervised project engineers in the construction and installation of process equipment. Resulted in significant improvement in process safety by eliminating a highly hazardous chemical and significantly improved mill’s water quality. • Lead engineer for paper mill’s conversion of water and waste water chemical vendors. Developed performance specifications, evaluated vendor bids and treatment programs, participated in corporate contract selection process, and facilitated the smooth transition to a new vendor. Project implementation yielded benefits of >$300,000 in annual savings. • Completed Six Sigma training program. Effectively managed a cross functional team to reduce fiber losses from the paper mill’s largest paper machine. Applied six sigma tools to exceed project goals and realize $275,000 in annual savings. Operations Management / Supervision • Plant manager with direct supervision of 11 technicians and management of plant operations, maintenance, and engineering of a specialty chemical and coated papers manufacturing plant. Directly responsible for: budget, inventory management, production scheduling, maintenance, logistics, safety and environmental compliance, process engineering, QA/QC, personnel training, evaluation and development. • Training manager for U.S. naval submarine nuclear power plant operations training program for 700 engineers and technicians. • Department head for U.S. naval submarine nuclear power plant shift crew of 35+ engineers and technicians. Responsible for power plant operations, maintenance, training, and nuclear regulatory safety compliance. Managed five technicians in pulp and paper mill power and utility department’s laboratory, additional oversight of operations and QA/QC in seven satellite labs involving 30+ boiler engineers and operators.
