Karin Ellison is Director of the Program in Life Science Ethics and Associate Director of the Center for Biology and Society in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. Dr. Ellison's research focuses on research ethics and ethics education. She has recently completed two NSF-funded projects to develop and assess instructional materials for graduate students in the ethics of science and engineering practice and social responsibility in science and engineering. She currently leads a project to enhance life and environmental science ethics education materials for the National Academy of Engineering’s Online Ethics Center.  Dr. Ellison also has substantial responsibilities with Biology and Society graduate programs at ASU. She convenes the students’ weekly works-in-progress seminar, co-teaches a seminar in which students write prospectuses for their dissertations or theses, and advises students. She also teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in responsible conduct of research for life science students. From 2002-6, Dr. Ellison was a compliance specialist and Interim Assistant Dean for Research Policy and Compliance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She had responsibilities in oversight of conflicts of interest and research with human subjects. Her activities included policy analysis and development, educational resources development, information technology system development, and management of compliance committees. By training a historian of science and technology, Dr. Ellison completed her Ph.D. in the Program in Science, Technology and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000 with the dissertation, "The Making of a Multiple Purpose Dam: Engineering Culture, the U. S. Bureau Reclamation, and Grand Coulee Dam, 1917-1942." She holds a B. A. from the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign with majors in chemistry and history and philosophy of science.
