  • Microbiologists Respond to Bioterrorism

    In the wake of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001, a group of microbiologists worked with the FBI to identify the individual or group who mailed letters filled with anthrax to American government officials and media personalities. Others struggled with the issues of whether and how to publish research results of potential use to terrorists. A part of the Research, Ethics, and Society project, this case can be used to address the social responsibilities of researchers, particularly those concerning scientists and engineers and their involvement in or opposition to military projects.

    This project presents the work of the project lead, his co-author, and his students with the explicit goal of performing an exploratory analysis that involves applying ethical principles, codes of ethics, and at times legal distinctions to several case studies. The work presented here is meant to be studied, critiqued, and developed into further research.

    The Ethical Decision Making Measure (EDM) is a scientifically validated assessment tool developed by Dr. Michael Mumford and his colleagues at the University of Oklahoma that measures ethical decision-making in a variety of fields. Respondents are asked to answer a series of multiple-choice questions about a series of short scenarios, and there are pre and post tests available. The site includes versions of the assessment tool for the social sciences, biology, the health sciences, physical sciences, engineering , scholarship and the performing arts, as well as including score measures, sample items and other information about how to administer the tests.
