Giving a Disappointing Rating

During his annual review, a salaried employee states that he is disappointed in your rating of him, particularly in light of the fact that during the year he was never told that he was not doing excellently. How do you reply?

• Giving a Disappointing Rating: Answer A

  "The company policy says that a rating of 'acceptable' is a good rating."

• Giving a Disappointing Rating: Answer B

  "I rated you as I saw it."

• Giving a Disappointing Rating: Answer C

  Answer B: "Let's go over all the details of the rating and see if I can't make it more understandable to you."

• Giving a Disappointing Rating: Answer D

  "You understand only a specified and small percentage can be graded 'outstanding' and 'excellent'."
