Joseph R. Herkert

Joseph R. Herkert is the Lincoln Associate Professor of Ethics and Technology in the School of Applied Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. Prior to joining ASU in August 2007, he was on the faculty of North Carolina State University where he served as Director of the Science, Technology and Society (STS) Program and Director of the Benjamin Franklin Scholars dual-degree program in engineering and humanities/social sciences.

Dr. Herkert has been teaching engineering ethics and STS courses for more than twenty years. His scholarly work is primarily in the field of engineering ethics, with particular focus on macro-ethical problems and issues. He is editor of Social, Ethical and Policy Implications of Engineering: Selected Readings (Wiley/IEEE Press, 2000), and has published numerous articles on engineering ethics and societal implications of technology in engineering, law, social science, and applied ethics journals. He is a past-president of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) and is completing a four-year term as Editor of SSIT's award-winning journal, IEEE Technology and Society. He is a registered professional engineer (Indiana) with more than five years experience as a consultant in the electric power industry.

Herkert received a B.S. in electrical engineering from Southern Methodist University, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Bowling Green State University, and a doctorate in engineering and policy from Washington University in St. Louis.
