Biography

From 1999 to 2009, Executive Director Emeritus of Sigma Xi, John Ahearne was the Director of the Ethics Program of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.  He was Director of the Sigma Xi Center from 1997 to 1999 and Executive Director from 1989 to 1997.  The Sigma Xi Center is an organization that publishes American Scientist, provides grants to graduate students and conducts national meetings on major scientific issues.  Dr. Ahearne was elected to NAE membership in 1996, for leadership in energy policy and the safety and regulation of nuclear power.  He is Adjunct Scholar, since 1993, of Resources for the Future, an economic research, non-profit institute.  Dr. Ahearne was Lecturer at Duke University from 1995 to 2006 and Adjunct Professor from 1996 to 2002.  A Commissioner of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 1978 to 1983, he served as Chairman from 1979 to 1981. He was a Director of Wisconsin Energy Corporation and Wisconsin Electric Power Company from 1994-2008 and Director of Wisconsin Gas LLC since 2000. Dr. Ahearne received his Bachelor’s in Engineering Physics from Cornell University as well as his Master’s in Physics from Cornell University. He also received a Masters and Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton University. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, the Society for Risk Analysis, and the AAAS.
