Responsible Research

This section reflects the Online Ethics Center's long commitment to furthering knowledge and discussion of the responsible conduct of research (RCR). It contains cases, discussions, guidelines, and regulations bearing on the responsible conduct of research, including both issues of research integrity and issues of the treatment of the research subject.

Research conditions described in the cases, scenarios, and dramatic readings range over a variety of disciplines, from engineering and computer science, the physical and life sciences to medicine.

Section Highlights

Along with many reference materials, this section includes materials original to the Online Ethics Center such as:

Group Mentoring for the Responsible Research Conduct: An extensive modular sequence of materials on the responsible conduct of research that foster group mentoring within departments or labs. This includes background on the method and advice for how to use the mods.
Graduate Research Ethics: Cases and Commentaries: Numerous real-world cases written by graduate and post-doc students who took part in workshops on Graduate Research Ethics Education, held at Indiana University, Bloomington, from 1996 to 2002. Each case is accompanied by expert commentaries
Relevant Reports from the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC): (NBAC) Reports and Commissioned Papers on Research Involving Human Subjects from October 1995 through October 2001. Extensive and multi-volumed, the OEC maintains versions of Ethical and Policy Issues in Research Involving Human Participants, and Research Involving Persons with Mental Disorders That May Affect Decisionmaking Capacity, and five other documents.
