About the Online Ethics Center
The OEC became an activity of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in March 2007, part of its new Center for Engineering, Ethics, and Society (CEES). The CEES started in April 2007. The CEES is appointing an advisory group and planning a conference series and other research and educational activities. The NAE has appointed Dr. Rachelle Hollander as director, to oversee the planning and development of the new center. Her e-mail address is rhollander(at)nae.edu; this is the best way to reach her. Her office on-site is Keck 1011, and her telephone number is 202-334-3068; fax 202-334-2290.
The OEC owes its existence to the founding leadership and continuing direction of Professor Caroline Whitbeck; she and Dr. William Wulf, immediate past President of the NAE, were the motivating forces for its transfer to the Academy.
A gift from NAE member Harry E. Bovay Jr. has allowed the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to launch the Center for Engineering, Ethics, and Society (CEES) and the Online Ethics Center (OEC).
Mission
As part of the new Center for Engineering, Ethics, and Society at the National Academy of Engineering, the mission of the Online Ethics Center at the National Academy of Engineering continues to be
to provide engineers and engineering students with resources for understanding and addressing ethically significant problems that arise in their work, and
to serve those who are promoting learning and advancing the understanding of responsible research and practice in engineering.
The site provides readily accessible literature and information, case studies and references, and discussion groups on ethics in engineering and science. It focuses on problems that arise in and for the work life of engineers and scientists. It serves practitioners, educators and students, and individuals interested in professional and research ethics.
